Redlands, in Southern California, was where I spent four years as an undergrad in college. I stayed the summer there before my senior year and it was unbearably hot. The San Bernardino mountains caught on fire and we'd stand at the windows watching the flames in the distance at night. Every time I walked outside my eyes would immediately burn. It all felt very apocalyptic. I wrote this piece years later, as something about the feeling of that summer stuck with me.
